Are there any simple ways I can help make the air cleaner?

There are â€‹lots of ways that you can join the pursuit for clean air in Bristol! Raise the issue with friends, family and colleagues, fundraise for clean air in the UK, or even join your local campaigning group.

For the concerned citizen:

Tell Bristol City Council you want something done about air pollution in the city - show support for a large charging Clean Air Zone, request better public transport infrastructure. Enter your details here to let your local councillor know you want something done about Bristol's illegal air.

Take our survey here.

Urge companies to do their bit to tackle air pollution. For example update transport policies/fleet.

Request to your HR manager that they take measures to improve air quality. For example: employee bike to work schemes, additional work parking charges.

Other easy and effective ways to cut your air pollution footprint:

Turn your car off at red lights/in traffic

Walk or cycle instead of driving. 69% of all UK car journeys are short ones. Walking or cycling will help reduce air pollution for everyone.

Reduce your wood burning stoves to use on only the coldest nights.

Use parcel pick-up points when online shopping to reduce city centre congestion.

How else can I avoid the impacts?

Work out at the best time of day. Joggers inhale more pollution than walkers over the same distance. The best time to run or jog is generally early, before the day’s traffic affects air quality.

Get some pollution-busting houseplants. Houseplants can help filter harmful compounds from the air at home. Peace lily, cornstalk dracaena and broadleaf lady palm all fit the bill.

Close your window during rush hour.

Use quieter streets when walking or cycling.
