Clean Air Zones

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area where a range of measures are introduced to reduce air pollution. Where there are the most persistent pollution problems, this is supported by restrictions to encourage only the cleanest vehicles to operate in the city.

A charging Clean Air Zone requires some of the most polluting vehicles to pay for access to the area. This could apply to all types of polluting vehicles, or just apply to certain categories, such as lorries.

After having been told by central government to address the air pollution issue in the city, Bristol City Council commissioned a study to look at different options for tackling the problem. The study looked at three different sizes of CAZ: small, medium and large.

We're calling for a large charging CAZ because research suggests that this is the most effective way to combat air pollution, and we're calling for a large charging CAZ because the study commissioned by Bristol City Council shows that this would be the most effective option to improve public health in the city.
